Teaching evaluation

The Faculty of Biology conducts regular teaching evaluations using the EvaSys system. Lecturers can register their courses for evaluation in a password-protected area.

Our mission

It is our ambition to provide highest quality teaching at the LMU Faculty of Biology. An essential component for the improvement of teaching is student evaluation of our courses. At the Faculty of Biology, we use the LMU provided software EvaSys to conduct evaluations.

Thank you very much for your participation!

FAQs

  1. Which types of evaluation sheets are available?
We have evaluation sheets for lectures, practical courses, seminars, tutorials and trainings. You have the choice between English and German language, and between online (via email) and online (QR code) evaluation. You can download sample evaluation sheets in all possible combinations from this table.
  2. What is the difference between "online via email" and "online (QR codes)" evaluations?
In online (via email) evaluations, you provide us with the email adresses of your participants and we send out personalized emails with an evaluation request to each participant. The email contains a link to the evaluation and a personalized TAN for participation.
In cases where you do not have the email addresses of your student, you might consider using an online (QR codes) evaluation. There, we will send you a sheet with a list of QR codes by email. You then hand each student one QR code and the student can directly access the evaluation by scanning the QR code with their smartphone etc. Alternatively, browser-based evaluation can be accessed with the website information plus TAN provided on the code.
  3. When should the evaluation take place?
The evaluation should take place early enough before the end of the class, so that the results can be discussed with the participants. Therefore, the evaluation should not take place at the last day of the class! Also, do not run it straight before or after an exam!
  4. How do I run an online evaluation?
Ideally you give the students appropriate time for filling out during the duration of your class. Although students could also be asked to fill out the evaluation after the course, by our experience this leads to much lower participation rates.
  5. How and when do I get the results of my evaluation?
The results are send via email to the email address of the lecturer which is provided in the evaluation request.
  6. Can I create my own evaluation sheets?
We offer the possibility to experienced EvaSys users to create their own evaluation sheets. Please contact the Evaluation Team if you are interested. However, please keep in mind that these evaluations are not considered for the BioPlus program and that you will have to print them out by yourself.
  7. How should a class with several lecturers be evaluated?
Evaluation results are personal data and are therefore only sent to the respective lecturer. If a course is organized in parallel groups with one lecturer each, it is recommended to treat the parallel groups as separate courses with their own evaluation. However, if a class is taught by several lecturers, there are two possibilities for evaluation:
    a) run separate evaluations for the different lecturers, or
    b) simply use one evaluation sheet for the whole class. In this case you do not get lecturer specific feedback, of course, since you evaluate only once.
  8. How are the SWS calculated if several lecturers participate in the class?
Example: If your class has 3 SWS and is taught by 2 lecturers you need to state 1.5 SWS for your evaluation request. If a class has 2 SWS and is taught by 5 lecturers you will have to state 0.4 SWS for your evaluation request.
The number of SWS is given as SWS per individual student, not your total teaching load. This is relevant for courses where lecturers are teaching the same experiment multiple times always to a subset of students.
  9. Who gets to see the evaluation results?
Evaluation results are personal data and are therefore only sent to the respective lecturer. In addition, only the Student Dean has the right to take a look at the data in order to assure high teaching quality at the Faculty of Biology. The evaluation results will also be used to calculate whether a lecturer is elegible for a bonus from the BioPlus program and how high this bonus is.
  10. What is BioPlus?
BioPlus is a bonus program at the Faculty of Biology for especially good classes within the Bachelors and Teacher Student curricula. More detailled information can be found on the BioPlus webpage.
  11. How long will the evaluation results be stored?
The evaluation results are stored in the database for one year, after which they will be permanently deleted. Please make sure that you keep your evaluation reports at a safe place, because they cannot be retrieved again.
  12. How does the evaluation report look like?
After the evaluation you will receive a PDF consisting of graphical summaries for all the single questions (once providing the number of responses, frequencies of marks, median, mean, standard deviation) as shown in figures 1 and 2 and once graphically as kind of profile which nicely indicates the «outliers» regarding the different questions (see figure 3). Single- and multiple-choice questions (i.e., students do not gives marks but tick an option offered) are displayed with frequencies (see figure 4). Additionally, all written comments by students (if they were placed in the comments box on the questionnaire) are scanned and included at the end of the document (see figure 5).
